Job Purpose

NaturalMotion seeks a Principal UI Artist to help drive forwards the ongoing development, visual style and workflow of the user interface for our future games.

As a Principal UI Artist you will work alongside the art, design and tech leads on the project to maintain, evolve and improve the interface for the #1 drag racing game worldwide. You will have the opportunity to develop your expertise and share your experience across the company to increase the quality of the suite of titles we are developing.

A forward thinker, you will be able to foresee pitfalls and develop strategies and techniques to optimise workflow & performance. You’ll elegantly communicate actionable items and work with the production team to integrate them into a live product whilst staying true to the culture and values of NaturalMotion.

 

Key Roles & Responsibilities

The Principal UI Artist works closely with the UI and collaborates well with other disciplines to ensure the creative vision is accurately depicted in their delivery of assets and will provide expert insight and feedback on existing and in-development features.

Ensures that all planning of work is effective, clearly communicated and realistic in its ambition and production dependencies.

Alongside the other members of the UI team the Principal UI Artist delivers interface elements from both a creative and technical standpoint.  The Principal UI Artist is responsible for all stages of the development of interface – from early whitebox prototypes, through to final visuals, motion graphics and marketing support.

Works directly with feature teams to provide the required high fidelity assets along with clean and efficient implementation work directly in the game engine, being careful to stick to budgets and platform constraints.

The Principal UI artist will provide expert critical feedback for less experienced team members, offering support and mentorship to raise the quality of execution across the discipline.

Presents and communicates work clearly and concisely to all levels of the team, both sideways and upwards. Represents the team as champion of the discipline, sharing inspiration from other media and critical analysis of what is best and worst in class.

 

Reports to:

Lead UI Artist / Lead Artist / Art Director

 

Line Reports:

The Principal UI Artist is responsible for managing their own time effectively. The Principal UI Artist will not have any direct line reports to manage but they are responsible for supporting, coaching and mentoring other Artists.

 

Required Experience & Skills  

  • Experience in a establishing a UI Art style and creating detailed UI concepts
  • Able to tackle UX issues and resolve UI/UX friction points
  • Experience in working on UI systems to run on multiple devices and platforms.
  • Experience of using Unity and integrating UI systems.
  • Good communication skills and giving feedback

 

Desirable Experience & Skills  

  • Any form of motion graphic skills and experience of UI Animation.
  • Has mentoring and coaching skills and supported the development of other UI artists.

 

Day to Day Duties:

Creative

  • Establishing UI Art styles and direction.
  • Develop player facing interfaces from concept through to completion.
  • Rapidly iterate interface in line with the game art direction.
  • Provide feedback on in-development layouts and visuals
  • Animate motion graphics to enhance the player experience.
  • Present and document best practise guidelines for workflow and visuals.
  • Problem solve complex visual language requirements.
  • Tackle UX issues and resolve friction points in the game flow.

Technical

  • Alongside engineers integrate interface elements directly within the game engine to a detailed specification.
  • Diagnose technical problems with interaction and work with engineers to resolve them.
  • Optimise performance of the UI systems to run on multiple devices and platforms.

Production & Management

  • Communicate progress and highlight issues effectively to ensure smooth feature development.
  • Document and present high level interface investigations to stakeholders.
  • Mentor and develop UI team members.
